Wisconsin Workforce Hub
Our Research
Through a partnership with Ascendium Education Group and WRTP I BIG STEP, the Wisconsin Workforce Hub is working with the Wisconsin Policy Forum on a series of research efforts examining apprenticeship pathways in Wisconsin.
The research is designed to better understand awareness of apprenticeship programs, barriers to creating or expanding apprenticeship positions, and opportunities to strengthen apprenticeship readiness and participation across the state.
Survey findings will help inform an initiative to expand apprenticeship readiness programming statewide and explore apprenticeship models in additional industries based on employer needs.
Expanding Apprenticeship Pathways
Wisconsin has a record number of registered apprentices, but still may have room to increase participation in certain regions and occupations. Northwest and West Central Wisconsin have fewer apprentices relative to projected regional job openings. Several in-demand fields, such as nursing, teaching, home health care, and early childhood education, offer limited apprenticeship options. Additional opportunities may also exist to introduce apprenticeship programs in occupations that lack them in Wisconsin but are already operating in other states.
Mastering Apprenticeships
With labor shortages reported in Wisconsin across many industries, it is encouraging that participation in the state’s apprenticeship programs is at a record high. Newer apprenticeship programs in several high-demand health care occupations also appear promising for expansion. Gains could also be made by strengthening connections between youth and registered apprenticeship pathways and by expanding pre-apprenticeship training programs, which introduce workers to the skilled trades and connect them to employers.
